Collaboration: Behaviours

I've always been interested in the behaviours during a collaborative learning activity. Different people act different roles in a group.

My colleague and I planned for a book club activity. It works like a reading with discussions. Groups weren't self-selected and it was based on their ability. Each group had 3 prompt questions on a book they have not seen before.
1. Four main points...
2. What we agree on....
3. What we disagree on...
Book club

Observations
8-9 years readers - Spent time trying to figure out who is doing what. No leaders. Chose to work outside. Handed the book one by one
9 - 10 years readers - Had one leader with idea of assigning roles. Discussed the main ideas and connected it to prior knowledge " this sounds like upcycling". Each member read a paragraph each while the others listened and followed. Handed book altogether.
10- 11 years - Had no leaders.  (8) Quietly read to themselves. Stopped in the middle sometimes to ask a question by themselves. Handed book altogether. Boys giggling. Finished the activity first.

Things to think about:

What will happen if it was self-selected?
Do roles change in different contexts?
What effect does this have in learning?
